Ecclesiastes 7:6

The Jordan Valley where John preached, produced great quantities of reeds, and as the breezes blew, the reeds swayed backwards and forwards. They were an image of a person whose opinions and character constantly changed. “John’s sending to Christ to inquire his character, might have led some to suppose that he [John] was changing and inconstant,  ... they might have supposed he had no firmness, or fixed principles.” – Barnes. This was not the case, as is evident from the Lord’s words – ‘Verily I say unto you, among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist’ John was certainly no swaying reed!

Bible Question Time

Atheism is not a phenomenon of the 21st century. It was around in the time of King David [1000 BC]. This is evident from Psalm 14 which he penned. David wrote, ‘The fool hath said in his heart, “There is no God.” David, inspired by the Spirit of God, doesn’t mince his words. He calls the atheist a fool! The atheist laughs at the suggestion of a Creator God. One day that laughter will cease, and it will cease quickly. In Israel it was common to use dried cow-dung as fuel for cooking as it was slow in burning. Thorns branches were seldom used, as they were consumed instantly.  Our verse this week gives a graphic image of the sudden end of fools!

‘Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?” –
