Many great ships were built at the Armstrong and Whitworth’s shipyard at Low Walker but perhaps the most unusual was the vessel known as the ‘Baikal’. It was ordered by the Russian government, and it was to be a large ice-breaking train ferry made to plough up and down the 400- mile long inland sea known as Lake Baikal in the remote regions of eastern Siberia. What made the ship so unusual was, that having been built, it was then taken apart and the thousands of pieces were shipped on a truly incredible journey, via St. Petersburg, to Siberia, where they were reassembled under the expert eye of a team of Geordies from the Low Walker Yard.

An incredible Journey

Great though this journey be, it is eclipsed many times over by the journey the Son of God made, when He left the glory of Heaven to be born at Bethlehem and die for sinners on the cross at Jerusalem. This journey cannot be measured in miles. It’s measured in heartbeats of Divine love! The Bible says, ‘The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world’ and ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’.

We need a bridge

In the late 1920s it was proposed to build a road bridge across the mouth of the river from South Shields to North Shields, and Borough engineer, J. Paton Watson calculated that it would cost £2 million. The main obstacle standing in the way of this ambitious construction was that ships passing beneath the bridge would need a clearance of at least 57 metres. This would require approach roads of 1.2 miles!

The Bible tells us that there is a massive obstacle standing in the way of people getting to heaven. It is the great issue of SIN. “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defiles” - Revelation 21:27. However, God in His love for the sinner, has done His utmost to remove that obstacle, when He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. The obstacle can be removed if we commit our lives in faith to the unfailing Son of God: for God “is just, and the Justifier of him who believes in Jesus– Romans 3:26

Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”

JOHN 10:10
